How To Use Rangefinder Arma 3

by Lori Wilson

Rangefinder Arma 3 is the fourth main game in the Arma series by Bohemia interactive. It was first released on March 05, 2013, and later updated at the end of June. Finally, the company released the entire version on September 12, 2013, along with additional episodes including survive, win and adapt. Armed assault or Arma rangefinders emit a laser beam with a single push of a button.

Once the beam touches the target, it will bounce off the terrain or the surface. The high-speed clock integrated inside the rangefinder will measure the time taken by the beam to return after it has been released. This helps in determining the distance between you and your target.

Unlike beams emitted by infrared laser markers or laser pointers, rangefinders release beams not visible under thermal scope or night vision inside the game. That means they are safe to use as it avoids giving your target an idea about your presence and help you get a clear shot at your target.

Rangefinder Arma 3-Era

In Arma 3, players can use laser rangefinders in every faction rather than being exclusive to BLUFOR in Arma 2. Apart from measuring distance, the laser rangefinder also offers the measurements required for elevation and the Azimuth of a target.

For measuring the distance for ground troops, you can get access to the handheld rangefinders available inside the game. Fortunately, a rangefinder is already installed inside armed vehicles like aircraft. A rangefinder is categorized under the targeting POD or FCS of the weapons. You will also find rangefinders on some shoulder-launched weapons like MAAWS Mk4 MOD 1.

It will help you calculate the distance between you and your target to take precision shots. However, you should know that vehicle and handheld rangefinders must be activated manually as they won’t scan the distance for an extended period.

Even though the process is quite simple, you are required to press a series of buttons while targeting a particular object. It will help you get precise distance measurements of your target, which allows you to hit them with more precision.

Factions Of Rangefinder Arma 3

As mentioned above, the rangefinder in Arma 3 will not just measure the distance between you and your target, but it also helps you with other measurements to compensate for a precise shot. To help you better understand a rangefinder in Arma 3, here is a list of functions included in a rangefinder. But remember, a rangefinder is not limited to these functions. It can be more than that.

  1. Measures the angle between two targets
  2. Calculates the distance between two objects.
  3. Help you with Azimuth to a target.
  4. Distance measurement of the target.
  5. Offer the flexibility to switch between mils and degrees, meters and feet, and so on.
  6. Measurement of vertical and horizontal distance to a target.

These are the rangefinder functions in Arma 3, and in the following updates, it might become more functional and operable compared to the current specification. So, remember to use a combination of these functions to get the best results. It will help you get perfect measurements for your shooting at your target.

In-Depth Guide For Using Rangefinder Arma 3

Like other binoculars, there are two essential keys that you have to be aware of while using a rangefinder: the azimuth key (Tab) and the range key (R). So, here are some tips that will guide you to use the rangefinder in the best way possible in Arma 3.

  1. Azimuth

If you want to learn more about the Azimuth, press the Tab key and hold it for a few seconds. The Azimuth details will show in a rangefinder. Remember, if you release the button, the details will disappear.

  1. Slope Distance

If you want to measure the slope distance, you need to press the R key and hold it for a while until you see a redpointing circle. Once you have spotted the red pointing circle, keep a hold on the sighted circle and release the R key. It will provide a perfect measurement for slope distance.

  1. Slope Distance And Azimuth

If you want both measurements simultaneously, you need to press both R and Tab for a while and hold them until the details and redpointing circle shows up. Now you need to sight in that red circle to get precise measurements.

When you sight the rangefinder in the red circle, you need to release both keys to get the right measurements. Before that, you need to stand or lay down on the stable ground to better picture your target.

Remember, when using the rangefinder, you have to press both buttons at the same time that lets you measure slope distance and Azimuth consistently. Remember, these measurements won’t until you have a crystal clear and stable view of the target.

  1. Measurement Of The Inclination And Azimuth

You would be glad to know that measuring the Azimuth and inclination is far easier than other functions. All you have to do is press the Tab key once and press it again. Now hold it for a while until the Azimuth, and the inclination measurement shows up.

Once it does, you can release the key and write down accurate measurements. This feature will help you measure distance and an arc when your target is at incline level or when you are shooting from a mountain.

That way, you won’t have to worry about the bullet drop or elevation. Once you have sighted your rangefinder, you can align it with your firearm to get a precise shooting experience.

  1. Measuring The Horizontal Distance And The Height Difference

To measure the horizontal distance and the height difference, you must press the R key once and then press it again. When you press it for the second time, you must hold it and wait for the redpoint circle to reappear.

Once the redpoint circle appears, you need to point it at your target and keep it still. Now let go of the key, and the rangefinder will measure the distance. You all know that you can’t be at the same level ground with your enemy, which makes it challenging for you to take out precise shooting results.

  1. Distance Measurement Between Two Points

One of the easiest tasks that you do with the use of a rangefinder is to measure the distance between A and B points. All you need to do is press and hold the R key for a few seconds until the redpoint circle shows up.

Once it appears, you need to focus the point on your target and press the tab key once while holding the R key. It will lock or confirm the first point measurements. After that, you need to repeat the entire process for the second point. The rangefinder in Arma 3 will display the ideal measurements between two points when you do.

  1. Assessing The Azimuth And The Horizontal Between 2 Points

In determining the Azimuth and the horizontal distance between two points, you are required to click and hold the Tab key for a few seconds until the Azimuth appears. As discussed above, you need to maintain the focus of your rangefinder on the target while holding the Tab key and press the R key to confirm the first target measurements.

Once you have done the first one, repeat the process for the second target by focusing on the target and releasing the Tab key at the end.

  1. Calculating The Distance Between Two Points Vertically And Horizontally

To calculate the distance between two points vertically and horizontally by clicking the R key for once and holding it for a while until the red circle point appears. Now sight the focus on your target and then press the Tab key once. It will help measure the first measurement and keep it intact inside the system.

After you need to measure the distance for the second target and then release the R key to measure the distance for the second target. Now release the R key, which will compare the distance between both objects and provide you precise measurements between both targets.

Frequently Asked Questions:
